Keila O'Broin is my leading gal right now. Young, headstrong, brave, powerful, unassuming, she's right at the stage where she still knows everything and is just facing the reality of the world. Really makes for a perfect blend for telling stories. She's not perfect, but neither is she docile.Miss O'Broin is a psionicist. Which is a fancy term for psychic warrior. More than just an empath, or just a clairvoyant, or just a medium, she's a bit of everything. She can read the emotions of humans, ghosts, and animals, but not vampires. She has the occasional visions of the future, and can peer a few seconds into the future when in combat. Increasing her biorhythms allow her to do some personal healing. A few latent powers, such as telekinetic shields and controlling animals, develop as she continues her training.
Her most dramatic and helpful power is her psi blade. A foot of controlled psychic energy, it extends from her right fist, and can cut through almost anything. Keila avoids using the lethal blade around humans, but puts it to devastating use against attacking paranatural creatures.
An orphan before the age of nineteen, Keila is slowly making her own family. Her lineage is unknown, and she doesn't mind. With best friends Simy, Chris, and Kiyoshi, and the love of Varick, she knows contentment.
Varick
Eight hundred years old, Varick Eitenhauer knows what he wants, and brooks no refusals. The icy exterior and cruel behaviors hide a passionate center that hasn't been brought out in countless decades. He and his sister are the most powerful vampires in Portland, and intend to keep it that way.Varick is the last son of a powerful family of mages and psionicists. He was born with the psychic powers, his darling sister Serilda with mage talents. Both kept their powers after becoming vampires, and have only grown stronger through the years. He is a healer, can control human minds, and is a powerful empath. Telepathy is a minor skill, though he is easily able to move through and control dreams. Several other powers are available to him, but he uses none so much as his prescience and ability to cloak his presence.
The vampire is very protective of those he cares about, but he isn't the smothering type. He willingly lets Keila choose her path, even if it endangers her life. Varick might allow the young woman to prove herself, but he will never abandon or ignore her. Any wound she might end up with, he will gladly kiss better for her.
Herr Eitenhauer will never fully admit or discuss his reactions to Keila. With a look or a touch, she breeches his defenses, and never knows that she has. Happiness and joy are reawakening in the vampire, because one special young woman loves him.
